So much of the offseason discourse has focused on the New York Yankees and how they plan to repair their roster and move forward in 2026. That’s spurred an incredibly annoying argument among fans as everybody “debated” the better fit between Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker.

But have you considered the possibility of … neither option?! Because that’s very much on the table! If you watched the first episode of Yankees Hot Stove on the YES Network, you would’ve been really discouraged by the commentary in response to Trent Grisham accepting the qualifying offer. It could indeed affect the rest of the Yankees’ dealings.

And to make matters even worse, according to FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray, Tucker was spotted visiting the Blue Jays’ facility in Dunedin, Florida.

The Blue Jays have already made two of the biggest splashes this offseason, signing Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract and Cody Ponce to a three-year, $30 million contract as they beefed up their pitching staff in a manner few teams can compete with. They replaced Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer with younger and better/higher-upside options.

If they add Tucker into the mix, forget about it. They’ll be the far and away favorites in the American League, and there wouldn’t be much the Yankees could do to compete.

Toronto’s offense was relentless in 2025. Was it a flash in the pan? Was it sustainable? We don’t know. They’ve largely had similar personnel for the past five or so years and found a true, threatening rhythm just once.

Even if it was an outlier, adding Tucker would mask any deficiencies that might arise. He’s one of the league’s best hitters who has operated at maximum capacity when he’s surrounded by fellow star talent. His time in Houston has built his mammoth free agency case, and he’d be in a similar situation with the Jays, especially if they can retain Bo Bichette. Then again, if he’s replacing Bichette, that’s a considerable upgrade that would still have their lineup taking a scary step forward.

Whether the Yankees are in on Tucker or not doesn’t really matter because they need so much more than just Tucker. The fact they’ve made zero roster-changing moves thus far already has them terriblly far behind teams that have a leg up on them. Three of their division rivals have strengthened their 2026 rosters with new additions while the Yankees have welcomed back Grisham (at $22 million) and Ryan Yarbrough.

Tucker going to the Blue Jays would put the pressure on Brian Cashman and Co. to make three impact moves to their offense alone. Either that, or they’ll just have to pray they get production from left field, third base, shortstop and catcher — four positions that have largely plagued them over the past few years.

At that point, though, we’d probably be looking at them throwing in the towel for 2026 and hoping for the best, as we wait for the implications of a work stoppage next December.
