The Tigers have been the subject of trade rumors for all the wrong reasons so far this offseason (please, national media outlets, cool it on the Tarik Skubal speculation), and fans have been itching to see any rumors or connections that would involve Detroit actually acquiring big names.

Mystifyingly, they do seem to be in on Ketel Marte, even though he wouldn’t make much sense with Gleyber Torres returning to second base. It’s a solid place to start, but with the Winter Meetings coming up, we’re itching to see some real action.

Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN did breathe some life into Tigers fandom, with a list of 25 players who could be traded this offseason. Skubal is on it (sigh), but perhaps more importantly, there are four players listed as good fits for Detroit.

Two of them come from within the AL Central, Byron Buxton and Steven Kwan, and the other two are the Red Sox’s Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu.

Now that’s what we’re talking about. Buxton and Kwan trades seem pretty unlikely, but Detroit is No. 1 on both Duran and Abreu’s lists.

The Tigers’ front office would be loathe to give up the prospect capital it would take to get Buxton or Kwan. The Twins are years away from contending again after completely tearing down their roster at the trade deadline (and they’re reportedly willing to listen on Joe Ryan), but the Guardians will continue to be Detroit’s biggest threat within the division.

Duran and Abreu are more realistic, and would fulfill different needs. Duran is faster and had the better bat in 2025, but Abreu is an elite defensive right fielder — which the Tigers desperately need, and he slugged more than Duran this season.

Neither are going to be easy gets for anyone who’s interested in them given their years of team control (Abreu is still pre-arbitration), but the Red Sox are reportedly interested in moving one or the other this offseason, and the Tigers need a better defensive right fielder than Kerry Carpenter, who should probably be a full-time DH.

The Winter Meetings are just a few days away, and hopefully Scott Harris will come in hot and make some moves to really kick off what’s been a sleepy Tigers offseason so far. A trade for any of these four players would excite the fanbase without a doubt.
