It feels like it could come down to two teams for free-agent slugger Pete Alonso.

According to multiple reports, Alonso is either going to remain with the New York Mets or sign with the Boston Red Sox. Those are the two most likely scenarios, according to a flurry of reports, and there hasn’t been much speculation as to a third option.

Signing Alonso not only would give the Red Sox an impactful bat at the top of the order, but it also could trigger a move which hinders the rival Yankees. Win-win scenario, right?

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden on Wednesday wrote the Yankees would “love to retain” Cody Bellinger after an impressive first season in pinstripes. However, if Boston is able to sign with Alonso, it could throw a wrench into the situation.

“If Bellinger doesn’t return to the Yankees, there have been rumors that he’d be open to returning to the Dodgers — where he began his career — as well as rumblings that the Mets could pivot to him if they can’t bring Alonso back,” Bowden wrote.

Bowden noted the Yankees have a strong chance to retain Bellinger, unless they pivot to top free agent Kyle Tucker.

… Or, perhaps, if the rival Red Sox sign a prized free agent they’ve been heavily linked to.
