Following his stint as manager of the Los Angeles Angels, Ron Washington is returning to his roots.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Washington is finalizing a deal to join the San Francisco Giants as their major league infield coach. The 2021 World Series champion began his coaching career with the Athletics as their first base coach in 1996, becoming their infield coach the following year.

The Angels had hired Washington as their manager prior to the 2024 season, and he led the team to a 63-99 record in his first year. His 2025 campaign was cut short after 80 games when he was forced to take a medical leave, later revealing that he was recovering from quadruple bypass heart surgery and wouldn’t return to the team for the remainder of the year. The Angels announced that he wouldn’t be returning for the 2026 season and subsequently hired longtime MLB catcher Kurt Suzuki as his replacement.

During his first run with the A’s, Washington was credited with the development of star infielders like six-time Gold Glove third baseman Eric Chavez and shortstop Miguel Tejada, who was named American League MVP in 2002. He remained with the franchise until he was hired as the manager of the Texas Rangers prior to the 2007 season.

When Washington resigned from his position with the Rangers in 2014, he once again returned to the A’s as their infield coach and third base coach in 2015 and 2016. He later joined the Atlanta Braves as their third base coach, winning his first career World Series title in 2021.

Washington is now joining a Giants team that went 81-81 in 2025 and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
