Wilson Contreras

As the St. Louis Cardinals look to completely restructure their team for the future to get younger and creating some room with their payroll flexibility, it has led to increased trade discussions around some of their more notable players. They already traded Sonny Gray, but it seems like one of Wilson Contreras, Brendan Donovan, or Lars Nootbaar will be next.

With the recent news that Wilson Contreras would be willing to waive his no-trade clause, it seems all but certain he will be traded at some point.

A team that makes sense to trade with the Cardinals for Wilson Contreras, and have him waive his no-trade clause, is the Cleveland Guardians.

St. Louis Cardinals Trade Wilson Contreras to the Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians are coming off a 2025 MLB season in which they had an 88-74 record, which led them to win the American League Central Division and making the MLB Playoffs.

Yet, they didn’t go far because their offense that ranked among the worst in the regular season, stayed that way in the playoffs and couldn’t help in propelling them further. The Guardians need a spark offensively to help them further the potential they showed last season, and a trade for Wilson Contreras would do that.

Wilson Contreras is coming off a strong 2025 season in which he had a .257/.344/.447 slash line with 20 home runs and a career-high 80 RBIs. With Contreras having shown that he provides stabilizing production, and still having two years left on his contract with the potential for his team to pick up a club option in 2028 for $18 million, makes him an ideal trade target due to his contract and production.

With Wilson Contreras’ offensive spark he provides as well as a solution at first base, he is the ideal trade target this offseason for the Guardians.
