The Seattle Mariners enter the 2025 MLB offseason with higher expectations for next year. After Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez guided Seattle to the ALCS in 2025, the team believes it can take the next step to World Series contention. In fact, the front office seems to understand the need for upgrades to make that happen.
According to the Seattle Times’ Adam Jude, the Mariners are interested in trading for St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan this offseason. This isn’t the first time Seattle has expressed interest in Donovan, as the team tried to acquire him in 2024.
Donovan made the National League All-Star team for the first time in 2025, and it was very deserving. The 28-year-old infielder had a .287 average, 10 home runs, and 50 runs batted in over 118 games. However, the most impressive part of Donovan’s game was his high-contact rate and low strikeout rate.
The Mariners would benefit from acquiring Donovan if the team is unable to retain Jorge Polanco as its second baseman for 2026. The St. Louis infielder is a popular name on the trade market heading into the Winter Meetings, but it’s unclear if he will truly become available or not.
