ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Ron Washington, a fan favorite who spent several years with the Atlanta Braves organization, is set to join the San Francisco Giants as an infield coach, according to multiple reports.
This will be Washington’s 21st season as a big-league coach, joining new skipper Tony Vitello, the former University of Tennessee head coach, who is transitioning from college ball to the major leagues without any coaching experience.
The hire was first reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Washington, 73, stepped away from his most recent managerial gig with the Los Angeles Angels in mid-June due to health reasons, managing 74 of the team’s 162 games. He later revealed that he had undergone a quadruple bypass procedure and had hoped to manage the team in 2026, before Los Angeles ultimately hired former big-league catcher Kurt Suzuki as its next manager.

Previously, Washington spent seven seasons as third-base and infield coach for the Braves, helping Brian Snitker and the Braves earn a World Series title in 2021. He managed the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014 and led them to two American League pennants but is better known for being an infield guru with the Oakland Athletics, where he worked with infielders Miguel Tejada and Eric Chavez.
Washington will get to work with a talented pair of infielders, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames, every day in San Francisco. He’ll also have the opportunity to familiarize Rafael Devers and 21-year-old prospect Bryce Eldridge with the intricacies of first base.
