Former New York Yankees right-hander Michael King has to feel confident about what his free-agency market is going to look like.
It’s tough to get a perfect feel for the market for the San Diego Padres‘ free agent due to some of his injuries, but after his former teammate Dylan Cease landed a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, it almost feels safe to say that King is going to get a much bigger contract than some expect.
Where he will land is the next question, but the Yankees are certainly an attractive spot for the reliever-turned-starter.
Despite that reality, Pete Caldera of NJ.com believes he’ll join the Boston Red Sox.
“A New Englander (Boston College) and ex-Yankee, King goes to the other side of The Rivalry, boosting Boston’s rotation,” he wrote.
As for other landing spots, NJ.com’s Andrew Tredinnick also doesn’t believe he’ll end up back with the Yankees in the Bronx, predicting him to take a deal with the crosstown rival New York Mets.
“They found success with another former Yankees relief standout in Clay Holmes. The duo links up again to bolster the top of the team’s staff.”
There’s still a chance King could return to the Yankees on a new deal, but it’s also important to remember that many teams around the league are searching for starters.
King has a strong argument as the best right-hander available right now, so there’s going to be a premium price attached.
