Kyle Schwarber is one of the best free agents available this winter, and plenty of contenders could be trying to land him. The Philadelphia Phillies may want him back, but they will have to outbid other teams.
Schwarber would be a fit on many teams, but his connection to Cincinnati has many experts saying the Reds have a chance to land him. MLB insider Mark Feinsand provided an update on the Reds’ chances of actually landing the superstar slugger.
“I believe that the Reds do have a shot at signing Schwarber, though I certainly wouldn’t label them as the favorites,” Feinsand wrote on Wednesday. “Cincinnati is looking for a big bat in the middle of the lineup, and if Schwarber has any interest in playing close to home (he’s from nearby Middletown, Ohio), the Reds are the only team that can offer him that. It will, in all likelihood, come down to money as it does with most free agents, but GABP is a great hitters’ park and should be attractive to a slugger such as Schwarber.
“Cincy is highly unlikely to be the highest bidder, but if the offer is competitive, I don’t think it’s impossible. Based on conversations I have had, I would put their chances around 15%, which is a (little bit) higher than I would have said a month ago.”

The Reds made the postseason this year and could be looking to make aggressive moves this winter. According to Feinsand, they have a shot at landing Schwarber, which is one more team the Phillies will have to beat out to keep their star. Schwarber has spoken highly of the Phillies and has welcomed the idea of staying.
However, the Reds are the only team that can allow him to play for the team he grew up rooting for. As of right now, the Phillies still seem to be in the driver’s seat in the Schwarber sweepstakes, but as the winter meetings progress, the Reds could become bigger players for Schwarber.
