The New York Yankees’ long-rumored international class cannot be finalized until January 15, and there’s been plenty of upheaval in future classes in the wake of their decision to let their longtime international scouting director Donny Rowland explore greener pastures (aka, you’re fired).
Until Thursday morning, there was nothing of note indicating that the objective jewel of the Yankees’ international future — shortstop Wandy Asigen, due to ink his contract formally in just over one month — was anything but pot committed. Unfortunately, in the wake of so much long-range chaos, it was only a matter of time until people started questioning the particulars of Asigen’s commitment. Wilber Sánchez, a Twitter account with ~500 followers and no documented history, noted overnight that the Yankees and Asigen had broken off talks, and that two NL clubs were suddenly vying for his services.
Such a thing would be fairly unprecedented, but … it’s also a natural fear, given the current international instability. There was reason to believe in the unscourced report’s accuracy.
While we don’t have a resolution yet, @YankeesFarm, who’s been accurately reporting on all the prospects who’ve already broken their informal Yankees commitments, claims his sources have shot the scuttlebutt down. Not only is Asigen still slated to be a Yankee, but he’s started his Thursday in their facilities
Sources tell me that this isn’t true.
Asigen is literally at the Yankees complex right now.
For 2+ years I was told “Nothing will stop us from signing Wandy.” https://t.co/pDKz0l9PED
— YankeesFarm (@YankeesFarm) December 4, 2025Yankees still likely to sign superstar international shortstop Wandy Asigen, per reports
“Nothing will stop us from signing Wandy” certainly seems like it’s been tested as a guiding principle lately, but there’s yet to be any reason reason to worry the Yankees have lost their grip.
Fellow insider Francys Romero (for what his takes are worth) reiterated @YankeesFarm’s claim, noting that Asigen is still expected to sign with the Yankees, and that negotiations are ongoing (standard practice as things shift within the confines of the commitment).
Despite rumors of him returning to the market, top Dominican SS prospect Wandy Asigen is still expected to sign with the Yankees as of now.
Both sides remain in negotiations, according to sources.

If Asigen signs with the Yankees, they’ll have a lefty power bat with immense tools who’s still growing and developing at the shortstop position. He’s currently ranked No. 2 in the international class.
Of course … we’ve heard the hype around Donny Rowlands’ picks before, so we’ll believe it when we see it (sorry!). Hopefully, all the I’s get dotted and the T’s get crossed and we actually do get a chance to see it (and eventually believe it). Please don’t fumble this one. Even if it doesn’t work out, we’d rather get a shot at it than see some NL team swipe what was supposed to be ours.
