Johan Oviedo reportedly is on the move.
Per ESPN’s Jeff Pasan, the Pittsburgh Pirates are trading the starting pitcher to the Boston Red Sox in a five-player trade. The Pirates will get Jhostynxon Garcia and Jesus Travieso, while the Red Sox will get left-hander Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman in addition to Oviedo, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Here’s a look at the Red Sox’s updated rotation.
Boston Red Sox 2026 Rotation
Oviedo has been with the Pirates since 2022, when he was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals. After missing the 2024 campaign because of Tommy John surgery, he began the 2025 season on the injured list because of a lat injury and didn’t make his season debut until August.
He ended up playing just nine games, going 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 42 strikeouts across 40.1 innings.
After missing the postseason in 2022, 2023 and 2024, the Red Sox returned to the playoffs in 2025 behind an 89-73 record. Clearly, the starting rotation was a point of emphasis this offseason as they traded for St. Louis Cardinals starter Sonny Gray last month before the Oviedo deal.
The Red Sox had a strong pitching staff in 2025, posting a 3.70 team ERA, which ranked fifth in the majors. The starting rotation was a bit closer to average, as Boston’s starters posted a 3.92 ERA.
The star of the rotation was Garrett Crochet, who collected an 18-5 record with a 2.59 ERA, leading the majors in strikeouts with 255. His status as the team’s ace won’t change in 2026, but now the Red Sox have improved the back end of the rotation with the addition of Oviedo.
