Columbus Clippers 9, Omaha Stormchasers 6
Box Score · Clippers improve to 19-23
It should come as no surprise, but C.J. Kayfus had another monster day at the dish on Sunday. The surging Guardians first base/outfield prospect went 2-for-4 with a walk and his third home run since being promoted to Triple-A.
In other great news, help is on the way for Cleveland as a rehabbing Lane Thomas obliterated Omaha pitching, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk and a stolen base.
Other standouts included Kody Huff, who went 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs. Johnathan Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with two walks and Milan Tolentino went 2-for-5.
Starting pitcher Ryan Webb was knocked around, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in just 2.1 innings. Reliever Mason Hickman didn’t fare much better, allowing two more runs
The rest of the bullpen held down the fort as Bradley Hanner, Parker Mushinski and Nic Enright combined for 4.0 innings of scoreless relief as Enright picked up his first save of the season.
Akron RubberDucks 1, Chesapeake Baysox 10
Box Score · RubberDucks fall to 25-14
The less said about this game, the better.
Starting pitcher Trent Denholm actually kept Akron in the game, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 4.0 innings, but the bullpen dropped a huge turd.
Tyler Thornton lasted just 0.1 innings in a relief effort and allowed a whopping six runs on two hits, three walks and hit by pitch.
Carter Spivey took over for Thornton with the bases loaded and proceeded to allow a grand slam to put the game completely out of reach.
Akron managed just three hits on offense. Jose Burgos went 1-for-3 with a walk while Jake Fox tripled.
Lake County Captains 1, Great Lakes Loons 9
Box Score · Captains fall to 20-19
Just like in the Akron game, this is a contest best left forgotten.
Christian Knapczyk continues to be a spark at the top of the order, going 2-for-4 while Alfonsin Rosario went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. That was all of Lake County’s hits for the day.
Starting pitcher Jackson Humphries was OK, allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 4.2 innings pitched.
Reliever Jay Driver had a tough one, allowing an inherited runner from Humphries to score and proceeding to give up three more runs without getting an out in the fifth inning.
Jack Jasiak had a similar issue, allowing three runs without getting an out two innings later.
Lynchburg Hillcats 9, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2
Box Score · Hillcats improve to 24-15
Lynchburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back on Sunday, adding on more to the lead as the game went on.
Struggling top prospect Welbyn Francisca had his best game of the season, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIS and a stolen base, raising his season batting average to .200. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the just-turned-19-year-old (on Saturday).
Other multi-hit efforts belonged to Garrett Howe, who went 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base and Christopher Espinola, who went 2-for-4 with a double. Luis Merejo went 1-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Tommy Hawke also continued his rampage at Single-A, going 1-for-2 with three walks, two stolen bases and four runs scored. He’s swiped a whopping 41 bases in 39 games. He desperately needs a promotion to Lake County.
Starting pitcher Jervis Alfaro was brilliant. He allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 5.0 innings of work.
The bullpen held down the fort, allowing one run over the game’s final four innings to easily preserve the win.
