MLB: SEP 27 Cubs at Braves

According to Bob Nightingale, legendary Braves third base coach Ron Washington is set to become the infield coach for the San Francisco Giants.

Former Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington is finalizing a deal with the San Francisco Giants to be their major league infield coach.
Washington, an infield guru, could have the most impact of any free agent this winter with his expertise.

When the Braves decided to go the internal route and hire Walt Weiss to replace Brian Snitker, I thought there was a decent chance Weiss would take a look at bringing Ron Washington back on staff. Washington was a key cog in all of the Braves’ success from 2018–2023 before the Angels hired him as their manager.

It was a big step for Washington, an opportunity he had been chasing ever since his days leading the Texas Rangers. Unfortunately, the Angels didn’t give him much to work with, and then health concerns forced him to take a leave of absence for most of the 2025 campaign.

Washington required quadruple bypass surgery — a significant procedure — but said after the season that he’s feeling better than ever and wants to continue coaching. He’ll get a chance to do just that under new Giants manager Tony Vitello, the man responsible for turning Tennessee baseball into one of college baseball’s juggernauts.

College coaches making the jump to the pros isn’t something you see every day, but one thing is for sure: the Giants clubhouse won’t lack energy. Vitello is a fiery personality, and Washington is known for his no-nonsense approach. Neither is afraid to tell it like it is, making this one of the more intriguing coaching pairings to watch in 2026.
