(KNUE-FM) In Texas everyone knows that if you decide to break the law there will be consequences for your actions. It doesn’t matter who you are, in the Lone Star State, no one is above the law. And recently there was an East Texas County Commissioner who found that out after he was arrested for accusations of official oppression and impersonating a public servant.

We got the details from CBS 19, as Van Zandt County Pct. 1 Commissioner, Mitch Curtis was arrested earlier this week from an incident that took place back on June 7th. He was released from jail the same day on $15,000 bond.

Why the Charges Were Filed

Curtis is accused of impersonating an officer as he was attempting to make another man stop firing guns on his property. The other indictment comes as during the incident Curtis used his position as a county official to impede the victim’s ability to exercise his right to fire guns on his own property.

Why the Texas Rangers Took Over the Case

As you would expect with a case involving law enforcement this case was handed over to the Texas Rangers and all procedures were conducted in accordance with state and sheriff’s office policies.

The Van Zandt District Attorney, Tonda Curry has filed a request to recuse herself from this case to avoid a conflict. There will be a court-appointed person from the Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney’s Office who will handle the prosecution.

As always, all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We will keep you updated.
