The Philadelphia Phillies may not have had the success they’ve had in the last four seasons without Kyle Schwarber, and now he is a free agent.

Schwarber is one of the best free agents available this winter and could be a hot name at this year’s winter meetings. He had a phenomenal season, finishing second in the National League MVP race. Many teams are expected to pursue the veteran, but MLB insider Jim Bowden wants to see him sign with the Cincinnati Reds on a five-year, $160 million deal.

Schwarber is an Ohio native and grew up going to Reds games. During the season, he spoke on how he would love to play for the Reds while addressing the uncertainty of free agency. During the offseason, he once again expressed interest in playing for his hometown team.

“I grew up going to games there, and I grew up sitting in the bleachers and watching a lot of games,” Schwarber told WLWT-TV in Cincinnati in November. “I think the kid would be excited that you have your hometown team that’s calling. Also, being in the profession, knowing a little bit more about the ins and outs, you always have to listen and keep different options open, and just see what happens.”

Schwarber is one of the best sluggers in the game, hitting 187 home runs in the last four years for the Phillies. The Reds are a young team that made the postseason this year. They could use a veteran with power like Schwarber in their lineup.

Schwarber is not going to be cheap, and teams may have concerns about signing him through his age-37 season. However, he is the type of player who could change the outlook of an offense.
