Portland native Dale Murphy, a seven-time MLB All-Star, is on the Hall of Fame ballot, potentially becoming Oregon’s first inductee.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Dale Murphy, who was born in Portland and starred at Woodrow Wilson High School (now Ida B. Wells High School) before an accomplished Major League Baseball career, is one of eight former players up for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

If elected, Murphy would be the first player born in Oregon to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Other Hall of Famers have ties to the state, including Bobby Doerr (class of 1986), who lived in Junction City, Oregon after his retirement; and Joe Gordon (class of 2009), who was born in Los Angeles but later moved to Portland with his family. Gordon attended Jefferson High School and the University of Oregon.

The vote, conducted by the 16-member Contemporary Baseball Era Committee, will take place Sunday at the winter meetings in Orlando. Results will be announced live on MLB Network at 4:30 p.m. PT and streamed on the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

The other seven players on the ballot are Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Carlos Delgado, Jeff Kent, Gary Sheffield and Fernando Valenzuela.

Murphy, an outfielder who played for the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies from 1976 to 1993, was a seven-time All-Star. He finished his career with a .265 batting average, 398 home runs, 1,266 runs batted in and 161 steals. Murphy was named the National League MVP in 1982 and 1983 and won four Gold Glove awards.

The Contemporary Baseball Era Committee, which meets every three years, requires a 75% vote for induction. Winners will join the Class of 2026 on July 26, alongside those selected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA).

Murphy previously appeared on 15 BBWAA ballots, receiving a high of 116 votes (23.2%) in 2000. On the last Contemporary Era ballot in 2022, Murphy received six votes (37.5%).
