The Los Angeles Dodgers have one of the most aggressive front offices in the league and have shown no signs of slowing down.
With Tarik Skubal’s name flying around in trade rumors, could the Dodgers be serious contenders to land him? ESPN’s Buster Olney reported on Friday that the Detroit Tigers are “engaged” in discussions with other teams regarding a Skubal trade. He is one year away from free agency and his projected contract could be out of the Tigers’ price range.
If Skubal is truly available, it will take a haul to land him, even if he only has one year of club control remaining. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden proposed this trade to bring Skubal to Los Angeles:
Dodgers receive: LHP Tarik SkubalTigers receive: RHP Tyler Glasnow, RHP Emmet Sheehan, OF Zyhir Hope (MLB No. 20 prospect)
Glasnow was an All-Star in 2024 and signed a five-year, $136 million deal with the Dodgers before the 2024 season. He had a 3.19 ERA in 18 starts this year and could be an ace for the Tigers. He is more affordable than Skubal and has three more years of club control.
Sheehan has dealt with injuries in the last two seasons, but is a cheap, controllable and promising pitcher. He is under club control through 2029 and could be a star on a team where he has a steady spot in the rotation. He had a 2.82 ERA last season and made 12 starts for the Dodgers. Unfortunately for Sheehan, the Dodgers have so many elite starters that he is stuck behind them.
Hope would be a piece the Tigers would hope pays off down the line. He is a top 100 prospect with plenty of potential. Meanwhile, the Dodgers would continue to show the rest of the league that there are no limits to their pursuit of championships.
Skubal has won back-to-back Cy Young Awards and not many teams can realistically afford to pay him. He may be looking to be the highest-paid pitcher in baseball, and historically, the Tigers have not given out that kind of contract. The Dodgers, on the other hand, are willing to spend as much as it takes to win.
