The Pittsburgh Pirates have made their first notable move of the offseason.
Pittsburgh is sending right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo, left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego and minor-league catcher Adonys Guzman to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Jhostynxon GarcÃa and pitching prospect Jesus Travieso, a source confirmed to Pittsburgh Baseball Now.
GarcÃa, who is ranked No. 85 on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list, made his Major-League debut with the Red Sox this past season and went 1 for 7 with a double and two walks in five games.
The soon-to-be 22-year-old started the season with Double-A Portland before he was promoted to Triple-A Worcester, where he slashed .271/.334/.498 with 12 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, 58 RBI and three steals in 81 games.
GarcÃa, who bats right-handed, carries a .261/.351/.465 batting line with 67 doubles, 21 triples, 55 home runs, 209 RBI and 49 stolen bases in 370 games across five minor-league seasons.
A solid defender with a strong arm, GarcÃa has played all three outfield spots in his career with the most of his reps coming in center. His best tools are his 60-grade arm and 55-grade power.
Travieso’s 2025 season was his second in the Red Sox organization. He made 12 appearances/10 starts in the Florida Complex League, where he went 1-3 with a 2.77 ERA. In 39 innings, the 18-year-old right-hander allowed 26 hits, walked 25 and struck out 52. Travieso also made seven appearances/six starts with Low-A Salem and went 2-0 with a 3.51 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 25.2 innings.
Oviedo returned to the mound in 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and went 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA in nine starts for the Pirates. Acquired in a four-player swap that sent Jose Quintana to the St. Louis Cardinals, Oviedo went 13-17 with a 4.05 ERA in 48 starts with Pittsburgh.
The Pirates recently protected Samaniego from the Rule 5 Draft, meaning the trade frees up a spot on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old combined for 30 appearances — 20 of which came with Double-A Altoona — across four levels in 2025 and went 3-3 with a 3.99 ERA and three saves.
Guzman was selected by the Pirates in the fifth round of the 2025 draft out of the University of Arizona. He played in one game for Low-A Bradenton and homered as one of two hits in five at-bats.
The trade doesn’t preclude the Pirates from seeking further outfield additions, according to a source familiar with the deal.
