The Rule 5 Draft is fast approaching, marking an interesting checkpoint in the Major League Baseball offseasons.
For teams with openings on their 40-man rosters, Wednesday is an opportunity to acquire prospect talent from other organizations. The New York Yankees protected three eligible prospects from the Rule 5 pool in mid-November: right-handed pitchers Elmer RodrÃguez and Chase Hampton and outfielder Spencer Jones.
There are some good Yankees farmhands still available for other teams to select, however, and the site experts at MLB Pipeline believe a Triple-A reliever with some impressive peripheral stats could be on the move to a new organization.

On Thursday, MLB Pipeline’s Sam Dykstra and Jesse Borek named right-hander Harrison Cohen as the Yankees’ most likely candidate to be selected in the Rule 5 proceedings on Wednesday. Cohen would have to stay on the active roster (or injured list) for his new team all season, or he’d be returned to New York.
“Once undrafted out of George Washington, the 6-foot reliever (Cohen) has posted back-to-back seasons with sub-2 ERAs,” wrote Dykstra and Borek. “In this most recent campaign, he finished with a 1.76 mark and 1.10 WHIP while striking out 59 in 51 innings between Triple-A and Double-A.
“He ran pretty even splits by relying on a tight mid-80s cutter against righties and mid-80s changeup with good armside fade against lefties, all while sporting a more mundane 92-94 four-seamer from a low arm slot. The deception can be an issue for his control, but it also could make him a plug-and-play option in an MLB bullpen.”
The embedded video above shows off that slider Dykstra and Borek are referencing, and it’s a thing of beauty. Cohen’s low arm slot and herky-jerky motion deliver a frisbee effect that should have right-handed batters scratching their heads at the major league level.
Of course, it’s never safe to assume any prospect will be snapped up, because teams are under no obligation to select anyone in the Rule 5 Draft. But lots of teams, both contending and rebuilding, have openings in their bullpens, so Cohen may be one of the most likely prospects to go.
