The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to make some noise during the MLB Winter Meetings, when baseball’s top executives get together, and deals get done, either via trade or with major free agents.

During these meetings, unexpected deals can materialize, especially a blockbuster trade or a left-field signing that seems to come out of nowhere.

The Phillies are the most interesting names to watch, considering where their roster is. Bryce Harper went through some tension with the Phillies’ top brass, while Kyle Schwarber is a free agent and getting plenty of interest from other suitors.

Their roster is getting older — with players like Harper, Zack Wheeler, and Trea Turner all into their 30s — and a shake-up could be on the cards, according to a baseball insider.

MLB Network insider Russell Dorsey listed the Phillies among the teams that could make a big move during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida.

“I’m still looking at the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, who are a team that always has a lot of money to spend,” Dorsey said on MLB Network.

“The Dodgers haven’t made their big move yet. The Chicago Cubs, the New York Mets have been active as well as the Boston Red Sox.”

Dorey is right about the Phillies’ propensity to spend. They are an organization that is not shy about running up the bill, though they are careful to ensure it is a contending team worth investing in.

The Phillies were one of the favorites to capture the National League Pennant heading into the season and the postseason as well. Still, they were dispatched quite easily by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The team was mostly healthy, aside from missing Wheeler, though they failed to hit the Dodgers’ starting pitching.

Now, they have Ranger Suarez, a key southpaw pitcher out of their rotation, and Schwarber hitting free agency and Alec Bohm hitting the market next season.

If they lose either of these players, they will have a hole on the roster, and a move will become necessary.
