The New York Mets are seemingly bound for a very eventful offseason this winter. After missing the postseason, they’ve lost Ryan Helsley to the Baltimore Orioles, but they’ve replaced him with New York Yankees pitcher Devin Williams.
While these moves are important for New York, the free agency sweepstakes of Pete Alonso will likely be the storyline of the offseason. Alonso is expected to sign a massive deal in free agency, but there are a few suitors besides the Mets, too.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently predicted Alonso would leave the Mets and sign a monster deal with the Boston Red Sox this offseason.

“Alonso’s leadership, power and willingness to play every day would rub off on all the young Red Sox players and he’d take the pressure off rising star Roman Anthony,” Bowden wrote. “The Red Sox might need to refurbish the Green Monster with all the dings Alonso would put in it over the next several years.”
The Red Sox need to spend big to add a slugger in free agency. While Kyle Schwarber could make sense, adding Alonso would likely be the best move for them to make. He could play first base for the first few years in Boston before sliding to the designated hitter role as his defense declines.
The dream scenario would see the Red Sox add Alex Bregman, too, but signing one of the two stars is enough to be excited about.
