The Seattle Mariners have acquired left-handed reliever Jose Ferrer from the Washington Nationals in exchange for catching prospect Harry Ford and minor league pitcher Isaac Lyon.

The Mariners announced the trade Saturday afternoon, shortly after numerous reports broke.

The 25-year-old Ferrer gives Seattle another lefty bullpen arm alongside Gabe Speier.

Ferrer made his MLB debut with the Nationals in July 2023 and posted a 4.36 ERA in 142 relief appearances over three seasons in Washington. The 6-foot-1 Dominican Republic native totaled 121 strikeouts and 35 walks across 142 1/3 innings.

In 2025, Ferrer recorded a 4.48 ERA with 71 strikeouts and 16 walks in 76 1/3 innings.

Ferrer has some elite underlying numbers.

According to Baseball Savant, Ferrer ranked in the 99th percentile of all MLB pitchers in groundball rate (64.3%) this past season. He also ranked in the 95th percentile in lowest walk rate (4.9%), the 94th percentile in average fastball velocity (97.7 mph) and the 93rd percentile in lowest barrel rate (4.8%).

Ferrer is under contract through the 2029 season.

Ford is the No. 42 overall prospect in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 and was the No. 4 prospect in Seattle’s farm system. The Mariners selected him out of high school as the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.

Ford slashed .283/.408/.460 with 16 home runs and an .868 OPS in 97 games with Triple-A Tacoma this past season. The 22-year-old catcher made his MLB debut with Seattle on Sept. 5 and went 1 for 6 in eight games.

Ford has long been the subject of trade speculation, given that 2025 MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh is entrenched as the Mariners’ catcher for the foreseeable future.

Lyon was a 10th-round draft pick by Seattle in July. The 21-year-old right-hander made four starts in Low-A Modesto.
