Several teams have checked in with the Arizona Diamondbacks on second baseman Ketel Marte so far this offseason, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday three new teams have joined the group interested in trading for the three-time All Star: the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers.
Nightengale reported that Marte could potentially be traded due to his contract and being under team control through 2031. He added that the Diamondbacks believe now could be the time to move on from Marte and in are in “desperate need” for pitching with the Red Sox, Rays and Tigers each having the pitching depth to pull off a trade.
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman later reported the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays as fits in a potential Marte trade.
Marte’s name has popped up in trade talks this offseason as MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported on Nov. 25 that the Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies checked in with the Diamondbacks on Marte’s availability.
Marte is coming off a 2025 All-Star season where he slashed .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs. For his efforts, he won his second Silver Slugger award and was named to the All-MLB First Team for the second consecutive season.
Marte’s season was not without controversy, as there was some drama off the field due to absences and days off requests surrounding the All-Star break, which led to Marte apologizing for it.
General manager Mike Hazen said last month that while it’s unlikely Arizona would trade Marte, he would listen in on trade offers.
What could the 3 teams offer to the D-backs in a potential Ketel Marte trade?
As the MLB Winter meetings begin on Sunday and go through Thursday, starting pitching is one of the top positions of need for the D-backs as Zac Gallen is a free agent and Corbin Burnes will be out to start the 2026 season as he is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The Red Sox top pitching prospect is lefty Payton Tolle, who pitched in seven games with three starts last season, posting a 6.06 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched. Tolle is the Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. The Red Sox’s have six top 10 prospects that are pitchers, including Tolle, Kyson Witherspoon (3rd), Connelly Early (4th) and Luis Perales (7th).
The Tigers have one pitcher listed in their top 10 prospects: righty Jaden Hamm (10th), who started 22 games between Single-A and Double-A in Detroit’s farm system last season. Detroit could potentially add more pitching prospects in their system if they trade star lefty Tarik Skubal, who is a free agent after 2026 and has been connected to trade speculation this offseason.
The Rays have two pitchers in their top 10, including righty Brody Hopkins (3rd) who impressed with Double-A Montgomery Biscuits in 2025, posting a 2.72 ERA in 25 starts.
