Ted Cruz, Donald Trump Jr. and other notable figures took to social media to share their reaction to Tom Hicks’ passing over the weekend.
Hicks, the Texas businessman and philanthropist who owned two Dallas-area professional sports franchises and an English Premier League soccer team, died at 79. According to a spokesperson, Hicks died peacefully in Dallas surrounded by family.
Hicks notably found success as the owner of the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. In his tenure as Stars owner (1995-2011), Hicks saw the NHL squad claim a Stanley Cup title in 1999. He owned the Rangers from 1998-2010, seeing the club make a World Series appearance.
Hicks also held an ownership stake in England’s Liverpool FC. Before he stepped into sports ownership, Hicks was known for helping reshape private equity and investing strategy.

“Tom was a close friend and a great partner. He dreamed big and watching him bring the Stanley Cup here to Dallas was something that I will always cherish,” Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement. “Tom was a champion for sports and we had the same vision for Arlington — to make it a destination where fans could feel the heartbeat of our teams and our community together. Being shoulder to shoulder with him was always about more than ballparks and stadiums, though. It was about personal respect, trust and friendship. We shared a lot of miles together, and I’ll miss him greatly. My heart goes out to his family.”
Here’s a look at what Cruz, the Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars and others had to say about Hicks’ legacy:

Tom Hicks was always gracious with me.
No matter what the interview request or silly nonsense I bothered him with, he was kind & thoughtful.
I last visited with him at a game during the Rangers 2023 World Series run & he thanked me for saying hello.
Condolences to his family. https://t.co/K4Icvu0NQa
