Phillies get great news on return of Kyle Schwarber.

It is expected to be a busy offseason for the Philadelphia Phillies and GM Dave Dombrowski. There is likely going to be some roster turnover for the defending National League East champs.

Signs are pointing to pitcher Ranger Suarez leaving in free agency unless Dombrowski makes a last-ditch effort. There is another big-name free agent that he would like to retain.

Kyle Schwarber, along with Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, are power-hitters who are going to generate a lot of interest. The Winter Meetings begin in Orlando this week, and there could be some answers beginning with some of the top free agents. One MLB insider gave an update, and it’s good news for the Phillies in terms of retaining Schwarber.

Phillies Get Big Kyle Schwarber Update

Bob Nightengale of USA Today gave some updates on rumors ahead of the Winter Meetings. He gave one on Schwarber, which is positive news for Philadelphia fans.

“I’d be shocked if Schwarber doesn’t re-sign in Philly,” one GM said. “[President] Dave Dombrowski knows how much he means to that club and won’t let him go.”

That is certainly some good news, but there is still a handful of contenders involved, according to Nightingale. The Boston Red Sox, Mets, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds are also in the mix.

The Reds are a team that has been linked to Schwarber already this offseason. They are also an up-and-coming team under manager Terry Francona, and they are looking to spend this offseason.

As far as the Red Sox and Mets, they are in a battle for Alonso. He could still return to New York, but Boston has reportedly been making a push for him. His fit at Fenway Park would be ideal for the Red Sox.

Kyle Schwarber Expected to Return to the Phillies

Based on the comments from the GM to Nightengale, it would be surprising if Schwarber didn’t return to Philadelphia. With the Red Sox and Mets in the mix, it could drive the price up for Schwarber if the Phillies want to retain him.

After a great 2025 regular season that saw the Phillies end up with 96 wins, they were bounced in the National League Division Series by the Los Angeles Dodgers in four games. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report seems to agree with the GM that Nightengale spoke to, as he predicted Schwarber to return to Philadelphia.

“After feeling out his market for a day at the Winter Meetings, the Phillies will give Schwarber either a four-year or five-year deal at around $30M per year and will spend the rest of the winter figuring out more budget-friendly solutions at catcher, outfield, and bullpen,” Miller wrote.

Miller also mentioned that the San Francisco Giants have also entered the Schwarber sweepstakes. Again, another team that can drive up his price. Dombrowski knows what his outfielder means to his team, and it would be surprising if he landed anywhere other than Philadelphia.

If the Phillies are going to remain the team to beat in the NL East, they must bring back Schwarber. Rarely does Dombrowski not get his guy.
