The New York Mets missed the postseason this year, shocking many fans. Their starting rotation was a mess, and they could be looking to make huge changes to the group.
The Mets did not get what they expected out of many of their starting pitchers, including Kodai Senga. Senga started the year off strong, but was derailed by an injury. As the Mets look to fix their rotation, they want to move on from Senga entirely, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
“The Mets want to move on from Kodai Senga,” Nightengale reported on Sunday.
Senga was one of the best pitchers in baseball early in the year. Through 13 starts, he had the majors’ best ERA. However, after injuring his hamstring and missing time, he was not the same. He had a 1.47 ERA before the injury, but a 4.73 ERA after returning. The Mets eventually sent him down.

Senga does not want to be traded, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, but that decision ultimately falls on the Mets. When Senga is playing well, he is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but the last two years have been shaky, which is why the Mets may be ready to part ways.
As a rookie, Senga had a 2.98 ERA and was an All-Star. However, in 2024, he dealt with injuries and made just one regular-season start. Last season was clearly enough for the Mets to start considering moving on.
The Mets are expected to be heavily involved in the pitching market. Trading Senga could net them some outfield help or simply open a spot for one of their young pitchers to have a secure spot in the rotation. Regardless, they will need to find a team willing to overlook Senga’s injury history.
