The Cubs have been linked to free agent power bat Eugenio Suarez this offseason. Is he a good fit with the North Siders?
With the 2025 MLB Winter Meetings underway, it’s no surprise that the offseason rumor mill is in full rotation. According to multiple sources, one of those rumors is the Chicago Cubs linked with free agent power bat Eugenio Suarez.
In 159 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners, Suarez cranked 49 home runs with 28 doubles, 118 RBI, and an .824 OPS. His efforts earned him his second All-Star appearance of his career as well as an appearance in the ALCS. Unfortunately, the Mariners came within one game of reaching the World Series.
Body of Work Against the Cubs
The Cubs were well aware of Suarez’s production in 2025, especially when he smacked four home runs with seven RBIs in the first series of the season in Arizona. In addition, the Cubs reportedly coveted the right-handed slugger at the 2025 trade deadline.
Suarez has been as close of a sure thing as one could be when it comes to being a righty power threat in a lineup. Since 2016, he’s averaged 31 home runs, 88 RBIs, and an .801 OPS per season.
Playing most of his career with the Cincinnati Reds, Suarez is no stranger to blasting home runs in NL Central Division ballparks. Between all five central ballparks, the righty has hit 153 of his career home runs in those parks.

What Else to Consider
Although Cubs rookie third baseman showed signs of promise in the second half of the 2025 season, Suarez could be considered an upgrade if Jed Hoyer decided to pick up the phone. No, maybe he doesn’t provide the same defensive upside that Shaw does, but his presence in the lineup could be a game changer for the Cubs.
I wouldn’t hate the idea of a Suarez addition for the Cubs if that’s the rout the front office decided to go with, but only if it compliments other moves as well. Suarez’ strikeout rate could be a problem (29.8% K rate in 2025), especially with the Cubs’ lineup already short on contact hitters. But again, if there are other pieces added as well, I would not hate a Suarez signing. Just hearing Cubs’ radio voice Pat Hughes announce his name every time he comes up to the plate would almost be worth the entirety of the contract.   Â
