The Philadelphia Phillies failed to reach the World Series last season. Now, Kyle Schwarber is a free agent and is drawing interest from plenty of teams.
Schwarber was the National League MVP Award runner-up last season and had the best season of his career at age 32. Insiders have tabbed teams like the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets as contenders to sign him, along with his hometown team, the Cincinnati Reds. However, he has received an offer from a surprising team, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
“The Pittsburgh Pirates have made free-agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber a four-year offer, according to people briefed on their discussions,” wrote Rosenthal. “The offer almost certainly is for more than $100 million.”

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported earlier this offseason that the Pirates are looking to increase their payroll and may be a dark horse to sign one of the big-name free agents this winter. They may feel pressure to spend to be more competitive while they have Paul Skenes.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, their reported offer may not be enough. The deciding factor in where Schwarber signs this winter may be which team is willing to give him a five-year deal. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, teams believe it will take a five-year offer to get Schwarber.
The Pirates already face an uphill battle in landing top-tier free agents. They have not been very good recently, and outside of Paul Skenes have shown very little reason to believe that will change. That means it will take very competitive, lucrative contract offers to land high-quality free agents.
