The Baltimore Orioles need to make some moves this offseason if they want to close the gap in the loaded American League East.

The Toronto Blue Jays won the division and went to the World Series this year. They’ve already added Dylan Cease to improve their roster. The New York Yankees are one of the best teams in the league, and they could improve their roster even more. The Boston Red Sox made the postseason and added Sonny Gray in a big trade this offseason.

It’s clear the Orioles need to add talent to their roster to close the gap. MLB insider Jon Heyman recently reported that the Orioles were showing interest in free agent pitcher Ranger Suárez of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Suárez is one of the best pitchers left on the market after Cease landed with the Blue Jays. But he’s projected to sign a massive contract in free agency, which could put him out of the Orioles’ price range. Jim Bowden of The Athletic projected he would sign for $164 million this winter.

Still, the Orioles could shock the baseball world by making a big move for Suárez. They don’t typically spend this kind of money in free agency, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

The Orioles need to improve their pitching staff if they want to make it back to the postseason with their talented core of young stars. Adding a postseason star like Suárez would be the kind of deal that moves the needle for Baltimore.
