*PREDICTION*

It seems that the Washington Nationals could be one of the bigger players this offseason across the MLB landscape. Washington is reportedly looking to trade away some of its key guys this winter, including young infielder CJ Abrams.

Abrams was one of the main pieces that the Nationals got back in the massive trade that sent star Juan Soto to the San Diego Padres. The infielder has been good for Washington, but his trade value could be too strong for the team to pass up this offseason.

Abrams is coming off a season in 2025 that saw him slash .257/.315/.433 while hitting 19 home runs and 60 runs batted in over 144 games. The 2024 All-Star also put up 31 steals during the season, marking the third straight year that he hit this number on the basepaths.

The infielder remains a player with immense talent, but it seems that Washington may be looking to move off him to further enter into a rebuild. Abrams could have a strong market, and the Nationals may be able to gain some additional future assets to work with.

Since Abrams is still under team control through the 2028 season, Washington could ask for a larger return in a trade. The infielder could be the perfect piece to help a team reach the next level, all the while he remains on an affordable contract as an arbitration control player.

The biggest concern with Abrams’ game is his defense, as he was graded as one of the worst shortstops in the league, per Statcast. However, the infielder has shown the ability to play other positions such as second base, third, and has even limited experience in the outfield.

Abrams just turned 25, and just a few seasons ago, he was ranked as one of the top-10 prospects in all of baseball. His potential is still there, and if he were to land in the right spot, we could fully see him take off in this league.

Seattle Mariners Take Chance on CJ Abrams

One team that could look to land Abrams from Washington is the Seattle Mariners. Seattle is dealing with the free agency of both Eugenio Suarez and Jorge Polanco, making it a possibility that the team simply fills the void via trade.

Adding Abrams could allow the Mariners to lose at least one of these two players, while still giving the roster a boost. Abrams is young enough to grow with this team, and his contract could be very attractive to Seattle, especially while this team is contending.

Abrams could take over at multiple positions, allowing this team more flexibility to build out rosters. The infielder could get a chance to play alongside some of the better hitters in the league, which could help his overall game improve as well.

Seattle came within one game of reaching the World Series this past season, and making some changes to the roster could push them over the edge. This could be a solid move for the Mariners, and it would give Abrams a chance to play for a contending team.
