While the St. Louis Cardinals’ main goal this MLB offseason must be to restructure their payroll to clear room for future talent, they still need to be looking to add cost-effective talent that can help the team stay competitive. One area in which the Cardinals need to take this approach to address is their pitching rotation.
St. Louis has young pitching, but they should be looking to add more experienced players to the rotation to help guide the unit for the future, and one player they can look to sign to do so is Jordan Montgomery.

St. Louis Cardinals Sign Jordan Montgomery in 2026 MLB Free Agency
Jordan Montgomery was out for the entire 2025 season as he ended up needing Tommy John surgery. The last time he played was for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2024, where he posted an ERA of 6.23 with a 1.650 WHIP, and had 83 strikeouts. It wasn’t a great season for Montgomery, and pairing that with his surgery will drive his value down a bit with him now a free agent.
Yet, Jordan Montgomery had spent two years on the Cardinals, where he had some of his best production, posting a 3.31 ERA, a 1.191 WHIP, and 169 strikeouts.
With Jordan Montgomery already having played for St. Louis, he is someone they can rely on, and hope he can provide that same production upon coming back to the team. One thing is for certain, though, Montgomery has the experience, as he has been in the league for nine seasons.
That experience is what St. Louis needs passed down to the younger talent, and with Jordan Montgomery expected to take a cheaper deal, it creates an ideal situation for both sides the offseason.
