The New York Yankees could land one of the top free agents available this offseason.
The Yankees boasted arguably the best offense in the American League this season, leading the AL in runs scored and home runs, but there’s room for improvement. Shortstop Anthony Volpe regressed offensively, despite driving in a career-high 72 RBIs, posting a .212 average. Volpe is under contract through the 2028 season, but the Yankees could look elsewhere with his struggles this season.
MLB.com’s Manny Randhawa predicted that the Yankees could poach star shortstop Bo Bichette from the Toronto Blue Jays in free agency this offseason.

“A deal that brings Bichette to the Bronx is certainly feasible,” Randhawa wrote Monday. “Yes, the Yankees have Anthony Volpe at shortstop and traded for Ryan McMahon to play third base last season, but Bichette could potentially be inserted at second, especially after he played at the keystone position admirably despite having a compromised left knee during the World Series.
“Bichette’s bat would make any lineup better, but it would be particularly promising for the Yankees’ group, which can be feast-or-famine at times — especially when Aaron Judge is either slumping or hurt. With the Blue Jays now a major threat in the American League East, landing Bichette could be huge for New York — or Boston, for that matter, as the Red Sox have also been rumored to be interested if Alex Bregman leaves in free agency.”
Bichette is one of the premier free agents on the board this offseason and is one of the most sought-after players in the league. The 27-year-old is a two-time All-Star who slashed .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. Bichette was even leading the league in hits before suffering a knee injury near the end of the regular season.
If the Blue Jays signed superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker, it would be unlikely they could also retain Bichette this offseason. Landing the star shortstop would improve the Yankees’ lineup and add more consistent production from players not named Aaron Judge, while taking a key player away from a division rival.
