The Toronto Blue Jays have been heavily involved in rumors for many of the top players available in free agency this offseason, but have just officially lost a free agent of their own.

Toronto has been one of the most active teams in the early offseason after nearly winning the World Series. The Blue Jays have already made a big move this offseason, signing Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract, but are expected to pull off another massive move, with many believing the team will sign either Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette to a monster contract.

With the big name free agents overshadowing the Blue Jays’ offseason so far, losing a 29-year-old infielder to the Athletics in free agency fell under the radar. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reported that the Athletics have come to terms with Michael Stefanic on a minor league contract after a short stint with the Blue Jays this season.

“The Athletics are in agreement on a minor league deal with an invite to MLB Spring Training with IF Michael Stefanic, per source,” McDaniel reported in a post to X on Monday. “Stefanic, 29, has played in the big leagues each of the last four seasons, for the Blue Jays and Angels.”

Stefanic only appeared in nine games for the Blue Jays this season after playing in 25 or more each of the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Angles. He was called up in May following an injury to Andres Gimenez, but the 29-year-old infielder struggled with his brief time in the majors, recording only four hits and three walks in 25 plate appearances before being designated for assignment.

Though Stefanic struggled in the big leagues, he had success in the minor leagues this season, slashing .287/.403/.383 with six home runs and 51 RBIs in 106 games and could have been a solid depth piece for Toronto, especially if Bichette leaves in free agency.

Bringing in the 29-year-old infielder gives the Athletics more organizational depth in the infield and offers Stefanic a chance to earn big-league playing time if he can prove himself in spring training.
