The New York Mets have been through a lot over the last year. After missing the postseason this year, they reportedly lost their closer, Edwin Diaz, to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. As a result, the Mets could get very desperate to improve their roster in the coming weeks.
The Mets could look to make a trade for a closer to bolster their bullpen, but there’s nothing seemingly coming together at the moment. Still, the Mets could be active on the trade block.
The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Tim Britton recently reported that the Mets were open to trading starting pitcher David Peterson in a “need for need” deal that sends big league talent to both sides of the trade.

“In what Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has described as a ‘pretty active’ trade market, left-hander David Peterson is generating interest, according to league sources,” Sammon and Britton wrote. “The Mets are open to moving the 2025 All-Star if they could find the right fit in a need-for-need type trade, similar to the one they made earlier this winter in swapping Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien.”
The Mets could find a contending team around the league that’s willing to give Peterson a shot in exchange for some solid big league talent. This doesn’t mean the Mets will hunt a closer, though they could. New York could go after a slugger to replace Pete Alonso. The Mets could also target an outfielder to fill a big hole in the lineup.
Either way, Peterson is seemingly garnering quite a bit of trade interest right now.
