The Toronto Blue Jays know they need to add to the bullpen in order to get back to the World Series and ultimately win it. While their pitching staff was sufficient enough to guide them through the American League playoffs, Toronto also knows things can always be better.
While some of the top relievers have already been plucked off of the market, including Edwin Diaz and Devin Williams, there are still viable options for contenders to pursue.
MLB insider Jorge Castillo reported the Blue Jays are interested in Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks this winter.

“Pete Fairbanks is a very popular player this offseason,” Castillo wrote for ESPN. “The right-handed reliever has received interest from several clubs, including the Marlins and Blue Jays, sources told ESPN. Fairbanks, 31, recorded a 2.83 ERA in 61 appearances for the Rays last season. He reached free agency after Tampa Bay, in a cost-cutting measure, did not pick up his $11 million option. His injury history could be a concern for teams, but he’s expected to land a two- or three-year deal.”
Fairbanks recorded 27 saves for the Rays this year and has managed to post at least 20 saves in each of his last three seasons in Tampa Bay. Toronto’s bullpen would be much stronger with him in the back end.
The Blue Jays, though, don’t necessarily have to use Fairbanks as a closer if the market shakes out in their favor. They could sign Fairbanks and pair him with another high-end reliever like Robert Suarez which would then give Toronto some flexibility in the bullpen based on matchup or usage.
Spotrac projects Fairbanks will sign a three-year deal this winter worth $43.9 million which provides an average annual value of $14.6 million. For a team like the Blue Jays, this AAV is very reasonable given that they are expected to spend a lot of money this winter and go all-in.
Fairbanks has also spent most of his career pitching in the American League East and has experience at Rogers Centre as well, so the Blue Jays would not have to worry about his ability to pitch in the game’s most iconic venues like Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park.
If the Blue Jays can land Fairbanks, it makes their roster even stronger heading into next year.
