A playoff spot was within Brenham’s grasp Friday night at A&M Consolidated. However, the Cubettes (14-10, 5-5 district) could not hold on as they fell 9-8 in a dramatic road contest.
Brenham fought back from an 6-5 deficit in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead. After a one-out base hit into center field from Kinley Antkowiak, junior pitcher Kylie Baker pushed the Cubettes into the lead with a two-run home run beyond left field.
Freshman first baseman Harper Castillo gave Brenham a two-run cushion with her first career home run, hit beyond left field as well. Castillo went 2-for-4 at the plate for her fourth multi-hit game of the year and first since Brenham’s first meeting with A&M Consolidated back on March 18.
A&M Consolidated fought back, though, with four straight singles to trim its deficit to one. Baker got a strikeout, but allowed a two-RBI double into left field to see the Lady Tigers walk off with a victory.
The Lady Tigers’ comeback spoiled a solid offensive game for the Cubettes. Brenham earned 10 hits with freshman starting pitcher Laityn Davis and senior shortstop Avery Maurer joining Castillo in the multi-hit club with two hits each. Davis went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Maurer added a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI.
Senior left fielder Sarah Mabie also earned an RBI with her only hit of the game.
Baker threw 116 pitches Friday and entered in relief after Davis could not record an out in the starting pitching role. Baker struck out seven Lady Tigers while allowing seven hits, four runs and two walks.
Brenham recorded six errors on defense Friday, its most since a Feb. 28 win against Hargrave during an early-season tournament.
Brenham will honor its seniors Tuesday night when it hosts Rudder on senior night. The Cubettes will also have another chance to clinch a playoff spot with a win.
Burton Baseball
The Burton Panthers (12-8, 5-3 district) took a few innings to get its offense into full gear Friday night, but found productiveness in the later innings of a 10-0 win over Somerville (2-11-1, 0-6 district)
Burton opened the scoring in the third inning thanks to a Somerville error. Its first RBI hit came in the fifth inning courtesy of an RBI infield single from first baseman Eli Jaeger.
Shortstop Ryder Biggs added on with a bunt single, pushing the Panthers’ advantage to 3-0.
Burton left no doubt with four runs in the sixth inning and three more runs in the seventh inning. Second baseman Logan Tosta and center fielder Rueben Rodriguez hit back-to-back RBI triples in the sixth with Jaeger adding a sacrifice fly and Houston Hodde earning an RBI single into center field to push Burton’s lead to 7-0.
Pitcher Tyler Witt hit an RBI double into center field to open the Panthers’ seventh-inning scoring. Rodriguez earned a walk with the bases loaded and later scored on an error to complete Burton’s scoring.
Rodriguez went 3-for-4 Friday evening for his first three-hit game of the season. Witt and Biggs earned two hits each.
Jaeger drew three walks on the night, recording his fourth three-walk game of the year. Witt also drew two walks and was joined by catcher Braydon Martin in the two-walk club.
Witt threw all seven innings, recording a season-high 17 strikeouts while allowing only one hit.
The Panthers will play their final 2A series of the regular season this week against Milano. The series begins at Milano on Tuesday with a scheduled 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
