The Toronto Blue Jays have selected right-handed pitcher Spencer Miles from the San Francisco Giants with the 27th pick in Wednesday’s Rule 5 draft.
Miles, 25, has thrown just 14.2 innings in the Giants’ minor-league system since being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 June Amateur Draft out of Missouri.
Standing at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Miles missed the entirety of the 2023 minor-league season after undergoing back surgery, and made just five appearances in 2024 before going under the knife once again, this time for season-ending Tommy John surgery.
The Columbia, Mo. native returned to action in the Arizona Fall League this year, where he posted a 2-0 record with a 4.15 earned-run average and 12 strikeouts across 8.2 innings pitched.
“If he’s able to post on a consistent basis, keep the command and keep the stuff, he’s a useful pitcher on any team,” Blue Jays assistant GM Mike Murov told MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson.

Last season, the Blue Jays selected right-handed pitcher Angel Bastardo from the Boston Red Sox, who was set to miss the entirety of 2025 while rehabbing from Tommy John.
Toronto will need to keep Martin and Bastardo on the active big-league roster for the entirety of the 2026 regular season or they will be placed on outright waivers and offered back to their original teams if they clear.
The Blue Jays have found success through the Rule 5 draft in the past, most notably with reliever Joe Biagini.
Biagini was selected from the Giants in 2015 and would go on to record a 3.06 ERA across 67.2 innings pitched in his rookie season with the Blue Jays.
He also pitched in six games during that year’s run to American League Championship Series, throwing 7.1 innings of scoreless ball in the postseason. Biagini would spend three more seasons in Toronto before being traded to the Houston Astros.
