HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – The UConn baseball team is looking to keep their hopes of snagging an automatic bid to the NCAA baseball tournament alive Thursday.
They will take on St. John’s in an elimination game in the Big East conference tournament.
They started off the first-round game against Xavier Wednesday night like most of the other games they’ve played the last month.
But this one ended so much differently.
UConn hit 2 three homers in the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead in the double elimination tournament.
Then their bats went cold.
The Huskies still led 8-6 in the 9th, but with 2 outs, Xavier rallied for 2 runs to tie the game.
And then in the 10th, Xavier scored three runs to put the Huskies away.
Xavier won it 11-8.
However, the game did not get off to a good start for the Huskies, as Shaun McMillan knocked an RBI single into right field to get St. John’s on the board.
Aiden Dougherty was able to help UConn score a run in the bottom of the inning, but were denied of a second because of a diving grab and a great play to nab the runner at the plate by the Red Storm.
If UConn overcomes the Red Storm, they’ll play again Friday against the loser of the Xavier-Creighton game Thursday evening. If the Huskies lose, they’re out of the Big East Tournament and denied the automatic NCAA bid that comes with winning the tournament.
The Huskies would still likely earn an at large bid.
The selections for the tournament will be released on Monday.
