The Toronto Blue Jays will unlikely be able to trade one of their disgruntled players this offseason.
After spending the past five seasons with the Blue Jays, it seems that two-time All-Star pitcher José BerrÃos may want to part ways with the team. BerrÃos suffered an injury that had held him out for most of the postseason. At the winter meetings on Monday, general manager Ross Atkins revealed that the 31-year-old’s absence in the World Series was by his own choice, due to frustration with the team.
BerrÃos’ frustrations stemmed from being left off the starting rotation in the World Series, and now, with Toronto signing Dylan Cease and reportedly coming to terms on a contract with Cody Ponce this offseason, the team boasts a surplus of talented starting pitchers.

BerrÃos may be on the outside looking in to a Toronto rotation including Cease and Ponce, along with Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage and Shane Bieber. Though the Blue Jays may be interested in trading the 31-year-old hurler, BerrÃos’ contract may keep any suitors from pursuing a deal, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon.
“The Toronto Blue Jays do not expect to find a taker for right-hander José BerrÃos, who is owed $66 million over the next three seasons,” Bannon wrote Wednesday. “Yet even after agreeing with free-agent right-handers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, they continue to seek pitching help, both starters and relievers, with Suarez among their targets.”
In addition to being owed $66 million in the next three seasons, BerrÃos struggled this season, posting a 4.17 ERA with 138 strikeouts in 30 starts this season. Even if there is lingering frustration from the World Series, it would be surprising to see the Blue Jays part ways with the two-time All-Star if other teams aren’t interested in a trade.
