Pressure is on David Stearns and the New York Mets after they reportedly lost Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso just one day apart. The organization appears to be set on still contending, but the Mets have work to do to get their roster to a contender’s level.
First base, pitching and outfield are the biggest needs for New York as the winter meetings have wrapped up. It’s a long offseason for Stearns as he now has to regain the trust of the fanbase. If insider Bob Nightengale’s prediction holds true, headlined by closer Robert Suarez, he may have a chance to get the fans to believe again.
“The Mets take a run at Bellinger, but wind up trading for Astros first baseman Christian Walker or signing free agent Kazuma Okamoto, while also signing starter Michael King and reliever Robert Suarez,” Nightengale wrote for USA Today.

King has reportedly been the top rotation target for the Mets this offseason and while he may not be what many believe is an ace, he can certainly be a workhorse for New York’s rotation if he comes back fully healthy next season.
Suarez was viewed by many as the second-best relief option in free agency behind Diaz, so it’s expected that he won’t receive as large of an average annual value as Diaz reportedly did with the Dodgers. However, Suarez has recorded 76 saves over his last two seasons, so he would fit in very well at the back of the bullpen with Devin Williams.
The first base position is one that Nightengale gives two options for. With the Houston Astros reportedly trying to move on from either Walker or Isaac Paredes, the 34-year-old veteran could be the one to go. However, he does have a six team no-trade clause, and it remains to be known if the Mets are one of those teams.
If it does not work out for Walker, the Mets could turn to Okamoto in free agency who hit 15 home runs and 51 RBI in Japan last season. The 29-year-old is projected to sign a three-year deal worth $43 million, according to ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel.
The Mets certainly have an uphill battle ahead of them this offseason, but the organization could fill a lot of holes in the roster if Nightengale’s prediction comes true.
