Mike Hazen gives update on where Diamondbacks stand at Winter Meetings

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen breaks down where the team is at in terms of building the 2026 roster this winter.

The Diamondbacks’ series next season in Mexico City was officially announced this week, a two-game set against the San Diego Padres that will take place in April in what will be the second regular-season international foray in club history.

The Diamondbacks will be the home team — they are sacrificing two home dates at Chase Field — on April 25-26 at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú Béisbol.

The Diamondbacks’ only other regular-season series outside the United States occurred in 2014, when they opened the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Sydney, Australia.

The Diamondbacks had been expected to face the Padres in April 2020 in Mexico City, but the series was wiped out by the pandemic.

This will be the third time regular-season major league games have been held in Mexico City. The Padres and San Francisco Giants played there in 2023, followed by the Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies in 2024.

“We are extremely excited to showcase our brand internationally once again and thank Major League Baseball for selecting us,” Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall said in a statement. “We have played more (exhibition) games in Mexico than any other team in the league and have invested heavily in growing our fanbase across the border over the years.

“Mexico has long been a valued location and focal point for us in searching for talent, building relationships, and growing the number of loyal D-backs followers.”

The series had been widely anticipated since at least early this season. The Diamondbacks’ 2026 schedule, which was announced in August, includes an off day on Friday, April 24, before the series, and another off day the following Monday.
