Everyone seemingly wants to play for the Toronto Blue Jays these days, but that takes on a different meaning for the many fringy pitchers trying to make the roster in spring training.
The Blue Jays put everyone in the organization on notice this weekend when they outrighted Yariel RodrÃguez, who signed a $32 million contract two offseasons ago, off the 40-man roster. No one’s spot is guaranteed, but on the flip side, even those without guaranteed contracts will have a shot at making the team if they light it up in February and March.
Amid that healthy roster competition, another left-handed relief option has joined the fray.

Michael Plassmeyer, a two-year major league veteran with the Philadelphia Phillies who spent the season in the minor leagues for the Texas Rangers, signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays, according to the transactions log on his official roster page. The deal officially transpired on Saturday, but did not appear on the log until Thursday.
In his brief major league career with the Phillies in 2022 and 2023, Plassmeyer had a 9.82 ERA in 11 innings, striking out 11, but allowing 17 hits. For Triple-A Round Rock this year, he was both a starter and reliever, compiling a 4.43 ERA in 105 2/3 innings.
The Blue Jays’ most notable other projected left-handed bullpen options are Brendon Little, Eric Lauer, Mason Fluharty, and Justin Bruihl. Little and Lauer are locks to be on the roster in some capacity, while Bruihl is out of options at the minor-league level.
We don’t yet know if Plassmeyer will throw a single game for the Blue Jays this season, but the beauty of baseball is that many of these signings wind up mattering, as every team’s bullpen depth gets tested to the extreme over six months and 162 games.
