Former Diamondbacks pitcher reflects on 2001 World Series win

Former Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Morgan spoke about the 2001 World Series and the current team at the club’s 2025 fantasy camp.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Diamondbacks made their first move of the winter to add pitching, agreeing to a one-year deal, according to a source, with free-agent right-hander Michael Soroka on Monday, Dec. 8, the first day of baseball’s winter meetings.

Soroka gets a guaranteed $7.5 million, the source said, and has a chance to earn another $2 million in bonuses. The Diamondbacks plan to slot him into their starting rotation.

Soroka, 28, logged a 4.52 ERA in 89 2/3 innings this year, splitting time between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs, who acquired him in a deadline deal.

Soroka has had an up-and-down, injury-riddled career.

He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting — and sixth in Cy Young balloting — in 2019 with the Atlanta Braves after posting a 2.68 ERA in 174 2/3 innings, generating tons of ground balls with his sinker and whiffs with his slider and change-up.

But he blew out his right Achilles tendon in 2000 — and then suffered a recurrence of the same injury as he was working his way back the following year.

In parts of three seasons since finally returning to the mound, Soroka has logged just a 4.91 ERA in a combined 201 2/3 innings.

ESPN first reported the agreement.
