Many Los Angeles Angels fans want to hide under the bed when Perry Minasian speaks, and there’s good reason for their urge to flee. The Angels GM has acquired a reputation for saying things that are borderline goofy, and he did that a couple of times at the winter GM meetings this week.

The first occurred when he was asked about the Angels outfield after the Taylor Ward trade. The Halos have holes in left and center, and according to Vincent Page of Halo Hangout, Minasian actually suggested that DH Mike Trout could return to his old haunts center.

“I’m not ruling anything out,” Minasian said to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register as part of Page’s piece. “If him playing center field on a certain day makes sense for us to try to win that game, we’re not going to be timid to do that.”

That wasn’t the only borderline nonsensical comment Minasian made, however. The Angels are talking about moving reliever Reid Detmers to the starting rotation, even though he’s been a career reliever.

Most teams would impose a fairly strict innings limit on that type of pitcher, or at least have an idea of where the upper limit might be. But this the Angels, of course, so they do things a little differently.

“I’m not a huge believer in innings limits,” Minasian said. “We use our experience. We use the people we have, our medical staff, and we go start to start.”

The should terrify the fan base if that same philosophy is applied to new starter Grayson Rodriguez, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in the Taylor Ward trade.

If there’s anyone who should be on an innings limit it’s Rodriguez, who is trying to come back from an extensive injury history. The same is also true of Alek Manoah, who was signed during the winter meetings after being waived by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Hopefully new manager Kurt Suzuki and pitching coach Mike Maddux can restore order after Minasian’s comments, and this almost certainly isn’t the only time they’ll have to do this. At least the Angels have a direction going forward, though, and some new additions to get excited about.

The Angels have a legitimate opportunity to escape from the AL West basement if Suzuki and Maddux can right the ship after last year’s disaster, and unfortunately doing that involves cleaning up after the occasional mess made by the GM.
