David Dahl’s career in Major League Baseball began with immense promise.
From 2013-16, he was a consensus Top 100 prospect in baseball. At age 25, he made his first All-Star team. Through his first 240 games across three seasons — all with the Colorado Rockies — Dahl had 133 RBIs, a 112 career OPS+, and a .297 batting average.
That promise went unfulfilled, however. A series of injuries — a fractured foot, an ankle sprain, a strained shoulder — seemed to erode his effectiveness, turning him from a potential star into a borderline major leaguer.

On Wednesday, Dahl announced his retirement in a post to his Instagram account.
“Baseball has been my life for as long as I can remember,” Dahl wrote. “From being a kid in Alabama chasing a lifelong dream to stepping foot on a big-league field, it’s been an incredible ride. After 13 seasons, it’s officially time to hang it up.
“After making the decision to retire earlier this year, I’ve had the time to look back and reflect on the ride. I’m thankful for my teammates, the coaches, and the fans. I’ve been blessed to share clubhouses with some of the best people I’ve ever met and have had moments together I’ll never forget.”
From 2020-24, Dahl played 272 games in the minors and only 110 in the majors. His .200/.237/.318 slash line amounted to a .554 OPS (48 OPS+).
During that time, Dahl bounced between six organizations — the Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies.
Dahl, 31, last played in the majors for the Phillies in 2024. He went 12-for-58 (.207) with three home runs and eight RBIs in 19 games. He struck out in nine of his final 10 at-bats, then was designated for assignment in July.
Now he’ll embark on the next chapter of his career with enough memories to last a lifetime.
