The New York Yankees have not been too active so far this winter, but moves could be coming soon as Brian Cashman opened the door for a shocking trade.
The general manager was asked about potentially trading Jazz Chisholm Jr., and he noted he’s “open-minded” to everything, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. Chisholm just became the third Yankee ever to post a 30-30 season, the best of campaign of his career, but he’s just one year from free agency. Trading Chisholm makes sense if the Yankees do not see a path to re-signing him or extending him.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline proposed this trade that would ship Chisholm to the Philadelphia Phillies:
Yankees receive: 2B Bryson Stott, RHP Moisés Chance (Phillies No. 8 prospect) and RHP Jean Cabrera (Phillies No. 11 prospect)Phillies receive: 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Stott is under club control through 2027 and is coming off a solid season. He hit 13 home runs and posted a .719 OPS. He would be a downgrade from Chisholm, but would be a decent replacement while the Yankees wait on George Lombard Jr., their top prospect, to make his debut.
Chisholm says he doesn’t want to leave the Yankees, but it is not his choice. The Yankees may be operating with one eye on the future, and dealing Chisholm could land them two solid prospects and a big league second baseman. Meanwhile, the Phillies add another power bat to their lineup.
A middle infield of Trea Turner and Chisholm would be great for the Phillies. Chisholm set career highs in home runs and RBIs last season. He posted an .813 OPS in 130 games.
