*This is a prediction*
Pete Alonso has signed with the Baltimore Orioles, and now the New York Mets are shopping for his replacement before the MLB season gets underway.
Alonso became the anchor of the Mets since hitting a rookie record of 53 home runs in 2019. Winning the NL Rookie of the Year Award that year and stepping up as the Mets’ next franchise player. He’s one of those rare finds, and the Mets will have a headache finding his replacement, which most likely will be a downgrade.
Free agent Paul Goldschmidt is a player that will be the perfect fit. The Mets need proven players and Goldschmidt fits what the Mets need.

New York Mets Sign Paul Goldschmidt
Since debuting back in 2011 for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Paul Goldschmidt has been dominating games with ease. The 2022 NL MVP winner was a crucial part of the New York Yankees, but for the 2026 season, he may be looking across town for a new beginning.
Paul Goldschmidt is one of those players that changes franchises around and on a team with plenty of star players like Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, the Mets need experience for the MLB playoffs.
Despite batting .274/.328/.406 with 10 home runs, 45 RBIs, and five stolen bases in 489 at-bats for the Yankees, Goldschmidt’s stint was ultimately considered a disappointment, as the team fell short of a World Series title.
The Mets didn’t make the MLB playoffs in 2025, and their fan base is getting pretty impatient. The MLB free agency period should be the Mets’ biggest ally for starting next season with momentum.
With the departure of Alonso, Diaz, and Nimmo, the New York Mets have a lot of work to do if they want to be in the MLB playoffs. The first step should be signing Paul Goldschmidt to a $10-12M, one-year deal, start building around him, and sign legit playmakers.
