Righthander Dustin May, who pitched six games for the Red Sox after being acquired from the Dodgers at last year’s trade deadline, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cardinals in free agency, according to multiple reports.
May, who turned 28 in September, was one of the youngest free agent pitchers available this offseason. He posted a 4.96 ERA in 132⅓ innings between the Dodgers and Red Sox last season and finished the season on the IL with right elbow neuritis. He made five starts in six appearances with the Red Sox, going 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA in that span.
The fact that he finished the season with an injury was another notch in a long list of health problems for May. When he made his season debut last April, it was his first time on a major league mound in nearly two years thanks to an emergency operation for an esophageal tear and a second major elbow surgery. But he threw more innings last season than he did in any other season of his career.

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.
Another cause for concern was the drop in his sinker velocity. He averaged 97.9 miles per hour with the pitch in 2020 while he helped the Dodgers win the World Series, but he averaged just 94.5 m.p.h. on the pitch last season.
May was acquired to solidify Boston’s pitching staff on July 31 for outfield prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard. Tibbs, who Boston had acquired from the Giants in the trade for Rafael Devers, is currently the Dodgers’ No. 8 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. Ehrhard is listed as their No. 27 prospect.
May’s departure means both players who they acquired at last year’s trade deadline — May and reliever Steven Matz — have reportedly signed with other teams. Matz reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Rays on Monday.
But the Red Sox have made upgrades to their rotation this offseason, trading for Sonny Gray from the Cardinals and Johan Oviedo from the Pirates.
