The Chicago Cubs have yet to make any major moves this offseason, but they appear to be in the running for one of the best free agents available in third baseman Alex Bregman.
Here’s the problem: Bregman is a Scott Boras client, and anyone who has been paying attention to baseball for any length of time knows how this works. Boras is the top agent in the sport — and maybe in North American sports in general — for a reason. He knows exactly how to toy with the market, and that’s exactly what he appears to be doing with Bregman.
The Boston Red Sox — with whom Bregman spent the 2025 campaign — are widely viewed as the Cubs’ top competition to sign the All-Star slugger, but now, Boras has thrown a third team into the ring: the Seattle Mariners.
Is the Chicago Cubs’ pursuit of Alex Bregman going to end in heartache?

Boras has identified the Mariners as a potential fit for Bregman, noting that Bregman would have “a willingness to consider” Seattle.
To be perfectly honest, the Mariners do make sense as a destination for the three-time All-Star. They acquired Eugenio Suarez back at the trade deadline, but he is now a free agent. Jorge Polanco was a candidate to start at the hot corner for Seattle, but he just signed with the New York Mets.
Adam Jude of The Seattle Times has claimed that the Mariners are not going to pursue Bregman, but that could change as we get deeper into the offseason.
Meanwhile, Chicago currently has Matt Shaw at third base. A former top prospect, Shaw struggled at the plate during his rookie campaign in 2025, slashing .226/.295/.394 over 437 plate appearances. He did, however, flash some serious leather at the hot corner, managing a plus-12 DRS.
But the Cubs need more offense, especially considering Kyle Tucker seems bound to bolt this winter.
Taking that into consideration, Bregman would be a terrific addition for Chicago and could either make Shaw or second baseman Nico Hoerner trade bait, as Shaw could then slide over to second base.
However, as long as Boras is running the show, the Cubs — who don’t like spending money these days to begin with — will have a difficult time landing him.
