There appears to be a blockbuster trade brewing between the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres.

According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Mets and Padres have been talking about a potential trade. As of now, Francisco Lindor and Fernando Tatis Jr. are not involved in these discussions.

So who could be involved in this trade? Apparently, reliever Mason Miller has come up in trade talks. He earned All-Star honors with the Oakland Athletics in 2024, owning a 2.49 ERA while striking out 104 batters.

The Athletics traded Miller to the Padres this past July. The change of scenery didn’t bother him at all. In 22 appearances with San Diego, he had a 0.77 ERA in just over 23 innings worth of work.

MLB insider Jon Heyman also mentioned relievers Nick Pivetta and Ramón Laureano as trade targets for the Mets.

Busy offseason for the Mets.

The Mets started off their week by losing All-Star closer Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He said it wasn’t easy leaving Queens, but he really wanted to join the defending champions.

“I spent seven years in New York. They treated me really good. They treated me great,” Diaz said. “I chose the Dodgers because they are a winning organization. I’m looking to win, and I think they have everything to win. Picking the Dodgers was pretty easy.”

Roughly 24 hours after losing Diaz to the Dodgers, it was reported that Pete Alonso was signing a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles. He’s leaving the Big Apple as the all-time home run leader for the Mets.

In an effort to bolster their lineup, the Mets have signed infielder Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million contract. The 32-year-old switch hitter had a .265 average with 26 homers during the 2025 season.

If the Mets can land Miller in a trade with the Padres, their fans will feel a bit better about their offseason moves. Make no mistake though, there’s a lot more work that needs to be done.
